Who's Running for Texas Governor? Meet Greg Abbott's Challengers

Early voting is underway in Texas, where Governor Greg Abbott is seeking a fourth term. Democrat Gina Hinojosa and Libertarian Pat Dixon are challenging him in the November 3 election. Texas hasn't elected a Democratic governor since Ann Richards, whose term ran from 1991 to 1995. Hinojosa won the Democratic primary on March 3. Hinojosa is a five-term state representative from House District 49, covering central Austin and the University of Texas at Austin. Her priorities include public schools, health care costs and affordability. She proposes a $1,500 payment to every Texas household, calling it a "corruption tax refund." She has also called for suspending the state gas tax. Dixon is an engineer, musician and former Lago Vista City Council member. He opposes tax incentives used to attract businesses, including incentives for data centers. Dixon supports adults making their own choices on hemp and marijuana, provided they don't harm others. He also supports penalties for impaired driving and other behavior that puts people at risk.
